Based in Wellington New Zealand, Louis Thompson-Munn is a pianist and vocalist, specialising in performance, composition, arranging and music education. Originally from Newcastle in Australia, Louis moved to New Zealand in December of 2006 and attended the New Zealand School of Music through Victoria University in Wellington. Receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Music majoring in Jazz Performance on piano, Louis also has went on to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education.
Performing in a variety of ensembles and in many styles, Louis regularly plays and is a part of the thriving Wellington music scene. During the past few years he has been involved with a number of ensembles performing with many of the country’s top musicians. These include ensembles while studying Jazz at the NZ School of Music (2007-2010), performing with progressive band Riverblind (2009-2012), and Soul/R&B band Astro Empire (2010-2012).
Louis is the pianist and vocalist for Wellington’s premier covers band Superbad Soul Section, formed in 2009, during which time Superbad have performed for the Wellington Christmas in the Park Spectacular to a 35,000 strong crowd, and most recently at the 2015 Gardens Magic series at the Wellington Botanic Gardens sound-shell to 3000 people!
Louis has also performed at the Wellington Jazz Club, Wellington Jazz Festival, opened 2015’s Jazz in Martinborough festival, the Hawkes Bay Jazz Club, Wanganui Jazz Club & Auckland Jazz & Blues Club. Louis has also performed with NZ Jazz legend Rodger Fox in his Big Band & Jazz ensemble with vocalist Erna Ferry, the Royal NZ Air Force Band, Wellington City Shake-em-on-Downers & the Neo Hot Jive Orchestra to name a few.
Louis is currently performing with his own groove collective under the moniker ‘LTM’, Jazz trio ‘Ol King Cole’, covers band ‘Superbad’, Trip-Hop act ‘The 16th’, Motown & Soul band ‘The Fades’, performing solo and with other Wellington artists & bands.
